Introducing new Council Chair Stacee Stevenson RECE

The College is pleased to welcome its new Chair of Council, Stacee Stevenson RECE, who was elected as Chair in June. Stacee brings over 25 years of experience in the early learning sector, both as an educator and in leadership positions. She currently serves as Program Manager of Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child and Contracted Services with the Regional Municipality of Durham. Stacee is deeply committed to advancing the field of early childhood education and is passionate about supporting its growth and development in every possible way.

We sat down with Stacee to get to know her journey in the profession, her passions and vision for the early years sector.

You’ve served on Council in a variety of capacities over the past five years, including roles with the Executive, Registration, Discipline and Fitness to Practise Committees, and most recently, as Vice Chair last year. What inspired you to run for Council Chair?

Serving on Council over the past five years has given me valuable opportunities to listen, learn and grow as a leader. Each role I’ve taken on has reinforced my potential and strengthened my confidence. Being part of such a dynamic and diverse Council, alongside a dedicated and passionate group of College staff, has continually motivated me to contribute and offer my support wherever I can. When I first joined Council, I never would have imagined I’d be here today, and I am truly proud to now serve as Chair.

Can you share with us some of the topics or issues within the profession you’re passionate about? How would you hope to advance these issues as Chair?

Diversity, equity and inclusion are areas I am deeply passionate about. The progress the College has made through the current strategic plan is commendable, particularly in reducing barriers, communicating thoughtfully and inclusively, and identifying process improvements that prioritize DEI. Diversity, equity and inclusion are not just concepts to be discussed; they require action. It involves learning from history, reflecting on current practices, and continually examining our biases so we can grow and improve in the future. As we move forward, I am committed to working collaboratively to ensure that DEI remains a central focus in our training, communications and daily work.

Tell us a little about yourself: what would you want members to know about you and the skills and experience you bring to your new role?

From starting my career as an educator to my current role as Program Manager of CWELCC, my journey has been both diverse and rewarding. I spent many years working directly with young children, actively implementing play-based learning while continuously strengthening my knowledge and skills. Transitioning into a supervisory role gave me the opportunity to support educators through reflection, share my experience, and ignite their passion for the field. In my current role, I contribute from a different perspective by supporting operators across my region in managing the Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care (CWELCC) system. My experiences as an RECE have shaped my career and provided countless opportunities for growth and meaningful impact.

You joined Council in 2021. What defining experiences or values led you to get involved with the College?

My passion for early childhood education has always been strong. I firmly believe our profession plays a vital role in society, as we support families, provide children with their earliest social experiences, and contribute to their learning and development. My professional accomplishments motivated me to pursue new opportunities that would challenge me, broaden my skills and push me beyond my comfort zone for continued growth. I am truly grateful to have been elected and to have had such a rewarding experience.

This year, the College and Council will undertake work to develop the next five-year strategic plan. What are you looking forward to most about this process?

Participating in the strategic planning process helps establish a strong foundation for the College’s future vision. By drawing on the diverse expertise of staff and Council members, we can collaborate effectively and strengthen our collective impact. Using the current strategic plan, we can evaluate our direction and identify priorities for the future. I am excited to be part of the team helping to build the foundation for the College’s upcoming work.

What prompted you to choose this profession and stay in this profession?

I began my career as a Child and Youth Worker and later returned to school to earn my Early Childhood Education diploma. I was drawn to the profession after witnessing the meaningful impact of shaping the next generation and helping children develop the skills they need for their future. This work is both challenging and rewarding. I knew this profession was for me as each day is different, offering opportunities to build your skills and explore new areas of growth. When you give your best to this field, it becomes an incredibly fulfilling place to be.

Outside of your professional and leadership work, how do you most enjoy unwinding and spending your spare time?

Music sets the tone for my day and fuels my energy and passion. While my singing voice may not rival a pop star’s, there’s something truly uplifting about singing freely in the car. Simply put, music brings me joy. Growing up in a time when we stayed outdoors until the streetlights came on, my love for nature began at a young age and has stayed with me ever since. Whether I’m relaxing in my hammock or swimming in the lake, it brings a sense of calm and balance. Most importantly, I cherish time with my family. I have a wonderful husband and four incredible children who have grown alongside me over the years. They continually remind me of the strength of unconditional love and inspire me every day.
