Highlights from the January Council Meeting

Council meets four times a year to oversee the College of Early Childhood Educators’ (College) activities in regulating the profession in the public interest.

Here are highlights from the meeting held on January 17, 2024.

In the spotlight

Council approved a new Language Fluency Policy that sets out the language tests that will be accepted from applicants who completed an education program in a language other than English or French. The College previously accepted four English language tests, and five French language tests. To be consistent with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, the College now accepts those tests plus two additional English tests:

  1. The Pearson Test of English (PTE)
  2. The Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) test

This provides more options and flexibility for applicants while maintaining the same language fluency standards for registration.

Good to know

Council heard an update on the Knowing Our Numbers research project from Dr. Emis Akbari. This is a community collaboration involving 43 of the 47 local municipal service system managers. It is designed to identify strengths, gaps and trends in the licensed child care workforce. The College is supporting this project as part of its goal to become recognized as a source of high-quality data and information on the profession and the sector.
