Highlights from the April Council Meeting

Council meets four times a year to oversee the College of Early Childhood Educators’ activities in regulating the profession in the public interest.

Here are highlights from the meeting held on April 2, 2025.

In the Spotlight

Two of the College’s strategic priorities are to embed equity, diversity and inclusion in all our work and to establish and maintain meaningful relationships with sector partners.

At its April 2, 2025, meeting, Council approved updates to two registration policies to better reflect the unique nature of Indigenous early childhood education programs and the important role of Indigenous Institutes.

The Approval of Education Programs Policy was updated to reflect the joint approval process that was developed with the Indigenous Advanced Education and Skills Council. This process reduces administrative duplication for Indigenous Institutes seeking program approval from the College.

Changes to the Policy Statement regarding Practicum recognize:

  • The importance of an Indigenous worldviews and the needs and priorities of Indigenous communities
  • Land-based learning as a valuable form of practicum that supports and reflects the profession’s commitment to supporting Indigenous ways of knowing
  • The role of Indigenous Elders and Knowledge Keepers on educator teams

The policy requires that programs providing land-based practicum have policies related to land usage, learner wellbeing, and demonstrated collaboration with Indigenous community leaders.
