Overview of the January 2021 Council meeting

Council meets four times a year to oversee the College of Early Childhood Educators’ (College) activities in regulating the profession in the public interest.

Here are highlights from the meeting held on January 12 and 13, 2021.

In the spotlight

  • Practicum – Council approved a Policy Statement regarding Practicum, which discusses the importance of practicum experience as an integral element of preparation for practice as a Registered Early Childhood Educator and the College’s expectations of post-secondary programs in early childhood education with respect to practicum.  Council also discussed the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the responsibility of post-secondary programs to develop and implement strategies to address gaps in practical experience resulting from disruptions to practicum placements. 
  • Practice Guideline: Communication and Collaboration – Council approved content for this new Practice Guideline, which will be available in the spring. This resource will help RECEs collaborate with others to ensure high-quality early childhood education.
  • Conversation with the Assistant Deputy Minister, Early Years and Child Care Division, Ministry of Education – Phil Graham visited the Council meeting to provide an update on Ministry of Education priorities and address questions from Council members. He expressed appreciation for the dedication and commitment of RECEs throughout the pandemic.

Good to know

  • Council welcomed two new members: Adesua Ezeokafor, a public member appointed by the Ontario government and Yalin Gorica RECE, appointed to fill a vacancy among elected members from District 6.
