Council meets four times a year to oversee the College of Early Childhood Educator’s (College) activities in regulating the profession in the public interest.
Here are highlights from the public portion of the Council meeting held on November 4 and 5, 2020.
In the spotlight
- Anti-Racism – Council and staff are engaged in an anti-racism training series, which helps frame how the College can incorporate this important work into its mandate. Council approved the Statement of Commitment to Anti-Racism.
- Council Elections – Elections will be held in 2021 for Districts 3, 4 and 8, wrapping up on Wednesday, April 14, 2021. Council recognizes the importance of diversity and particularly encourages RECEs who identify as Black, Indigenous or People of Colour to consider running. Learn more.
- Child Care and Early Years Act (CCEYA) Regulatory Consultation – Council approved the College’s response to the proposed changes to the regulations under the CCEYA.
Good to know
- We welcomed to Council newly appointed public members: Shernett Martin and Ulana Pahuta. Their biographies, as well as those for the newly elected RECE members, can be found here on our website.
- The College has been granted the same legal authority as most regulatory colleges: we can now order physical or mental assessments in the rare cases where there is a realistic concern that a member is suffering from a condition that poses a threat to the safety of the children in their care. This confidential process ensures the safety of children and also supports members in obtaining expert medical advice and developing a plan to work towards a safe return to practice.
- The Funding for Therapy Committee has completed its review of historical cases where a member sexually abused a child. There were approximately 20 cases that were reviewed, going back to the inception of the College.
